GW Law Observes Mental Health Day 2016

Three days of fun and relaxing activities, informative workshops, and of course, healthy snacks! Take a break and enjoy programs that promote stress management, mindfulness, emotional health, and other wellness topics.

These events are brought to you by the Task Force on Student Well-Being, the SBA, and the Dean of Students Office.

Wednesday, March 30th

11 am – 2 pm: SALDF Pet Study Break (Cats in Stuart Basement – Dogs in SCC Conference Room)

12:15 pm – 2 pm: New Ways to De-stress
Seeking an easy and logical way to de-stress? Dean DeVigne will teach you techniques for releasing stressful thoughts.

1:30 pm – 2:30 pm: Mindfulness Webinar: Managing Stress and Shifting from Surviving to Thriving as a Law Student or Lawyer (presented by the ABA Young Lawyers Division)
Lawyers can practice mindfulness in their daily activities as a way to optimize performance and reduce stress. A mindful approach focuses on the present moment and promotes happiness and teamwork with physical and mental benefits. Although a mindful practice has deep spiritual roots, it now permeates corporate, athletic and academic settings to optimize performance. Learn how mindfulness is a simple, essential tool for lawyers to perform at their best. Glean insights from the panelists’ experiences with mindfulness tools as they lead you through practical, replicable exercises that will support you and your practice starting immediately after the webinar.


Thursday, March 31st

11 am – 6 pm: Law Students at Play! Come enjoy 30,000 Legos™, Sudoku and coloring all day!
Numerous studies correlate the importance of playtime to cognitive and social development. Unstructured play helps to develop creative thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and communication skills like listening, cooperating, and negotiating. Come to the SCC for Sudoku, coloring, and 30,000 Legos™. That’s right, you read it correctly. Get ready to have fun with the largest assemblage of Legos™ you have seen in your life. Lego™ challenges: tallest tower, guessing the number of Legos™ in a jar.

11 am – Noon: De-Stress Through Aromatherapy
Nancy Illman demonstrates how to release your stress and tension with natural scents from plant based oils.

Noon – 1 pm: Lunch Catered by Chop’t (courtesy of the SBA Wellness Committee)

1 – 2 pm: Yoga/Gentle Relaxation with GW Law’s own Kristin Hoeberlein
A 45-minute vinyasa (aka flow). Bring a change of clothes and get your body moving. Mats provided.

2 – 2:20 pm & 2:40 – 3 pm: Mindfulness 101: Guided Brief Deep Breathing Mindfulness – Micro Sessions
Research shows that mindfulness and deep breathing exercises are some of the most effective tools for emotion regulation. Come see what all the hype is about in one of two micro sessions, where Dr. Imran Raiz will guide you through a 12 minute meditation.

4 – 6 pm: Thirsty Thursday (sponsored by the Labor and Employment Law Society)


Friday, April 1st

9 pm: Night of Fools Music & Comedy Concert (Marvin Center, 3rd Floor Ballroom)
GW Law’s SBA 1L Leadership Board is partnering with Active Minds to present a night of music, fun, and laughter! Join us for the inaugural "Night of Fools” as GW Law's own rock star groups "Gunners & Roses," and "Attractive Nuisance, along with GW's acapella team the "Promissory Notes" open the night.
