GW Law Hosts Careers in Cybersecurity Law Panel

On September 26, 2024, the National Security, Cybersecurity, and Foreign Relations Law Program hosted a "Careers in Cybersecurity Law" event that attracted students eager to explore the dynamic intersection of law and technology. The panel of distinguished speakers included Leah Schloss, Senior Counsel at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency; Sunita Patel, Senior Assistant General Counsel for Product Security at Micron; and Kimberley Raleigh, Senior Policy Advisor at the State Department’s Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy. Professor of Practice Jonathan Cedarbaum moderated the panel.  

Each of the speakers outlined their journeys into cybersecurity law. They highlighted the importance of foundational experiences in both law and technology, shedding light on how these elements intertwined to shape their careers. The speakers discussed significant moments that ignited their interest in cybersecurity, emphasizing the critical role of the legal profession in navigating the complexities of digital security.

The speakers underscored that a deep understanding of these developments is important to making an impact in cybersecurity law. Sunita Patel stressed the importance of having a solid grasp of computer science and technology fundamentals, asserting that this knowledge is crucial for navigating legal issues in cybersecurity.

When asked about recommendations for aspiring professionals, the panelists suggested focusing on relevant coursework, pursuing internships that offer hands-on experience, and keeping up with online literature to build a comprehensive understanding of the field.
